Do You Mock God
- 2 Kings 2:23-24
- Josh Akin
2 Kings 2:23-25 (NKJV)
23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”
24 So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the LORD. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.
25 Then he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
Thus begins perhaps the most ridiculed, mocked passage of the Old Testament. Scoffers and skeptics list this as among the premier reasons to reject the Bible. “It is ridiculous. 42 boys killed by a couple she bears because they made fun of someone hair!”
But, consider with me: is it that this passage is strange, or the world around us that believes boys mocking God is harmless? Here, we will consider what mocking God does to the heart, and to a people, and how we can turn from it in our own lives.
